The Senior Environmental Manager leads a team of EH&S professionals to support compliance at 220+ locations across 41 states. Essential Responsibilities

Manage CarMax’s environmental program:

  • Identify, prioritize and manage completion of program objectives, appropriately balancing regulatory risk and business needs.

  • Guide and direct continuous improvement of the program by

  • Managing environmental program performance, determining trends and opportunities, establishing goals, and developing effective action plans.

  • Identifying, developing and continuously improving tools, training, programs and processes used by Home Office and Store teams.

  • Uphold CarMax’s positive reputation in regulatory community by maintaining open communications and sustaining collaborative partnerships.

  • Monitor legislation and lead development of proactive countermeasures, including influencing policy as appropriate.

Ensure CarMax’s environmental regulatory obligations are fulfilled by managing their team’s execution of:

  • Exceptional customer service to store partners by responding to questions and needs with timely and accurate information

  • Technical consultation to Home Office stakeholders, including Legal, Service Operations, Process Engineering and Procurement departments.

  • Resolving environmental regulatory inspections, including appropriately challenging and negotiating citations and fines.

  • Completion of all environmental permits, licenses, fees and reporting for new and existing locations.

  • Vendor and consultant management, including decisions to expand/retract relationships.

  • Support the development and sustainment of a culture at CarMax that integrates sound environmental principles into daily operations by

  • Influencing partners to appropriately incorporate environmental compliance considerations into business decisions.

  • Identifying opportunities and implement programs to raise awareness of and engagement in environmental compliance and, as appropriate, sustainability at stores and the Home Office.

  • Sustaining collaborative relationships with: store management teams, region team, and Home Office business partners (most notably Service Operations, Process Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Facilities)

Manage, lead and develop a team of two to five associates:

  • Provide timely performance feedback through day-to-day observations, file reviews and an annual performance review.

  • Create and sustain individual development plans and business objectives.

  • Maintain staffing plans to ensure appropriate support

Maintain and upgrade functional expertise via:

  • Participation in industry groups

  • Attendance at conferences and seminars

  • Relationships with peers at other retailers and companies

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field

  • 7-15 years of experience driving EH&S programs

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills

  • Project management experience is preferred but not required

  • Computer skills: Microsoft Office (Intermediate Excel a minimum)

  • Ability to deal with uncertainty, complex situations and manage change effectively

  • Ability to contribute individually, and lead, manage or participate in cross-functional teams

  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data into actionable information

  • Ability to communicate in a clear and open manner through verbal, written, and non-verbal methods, to all levels of the organization

  • Ability to summarize and present complex technical information
