BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY :

The Senior Enterprise Architect (EA) is a key member of the Technology team who sits at the intersection of product development and current and future technology vision. The Senior EA is charged with driving the vision and execution of CarMax Technology landscape across multiple business and technology teams. The Senior EA plays a critical role in aligning business vision and technology strategy and championing this strategy across Product leadership team, Lead Developers, Solutions Architects and Tech Infrastructure. Additionally, the Senior EA, in conjunction with the VP of Architecture sets the standards and key objectives for Architecture across the organization advising, educating and helping to establish the strategy, direction and key performance goals. The Senior EA is also responsible for advising, educating and helping establish the future technology landscape of CarMax across business units to ensure that technology solutions continue to deliver an unrivaled experience.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technology thought leadership to leaders across the organization. The EA will be responsible to evaluate technology fit, provide potential alternatives through analysis of the competitive landscape and leading proofs of concepts (POC), proofs of technology (POT), prototype creation and architectural spikes.

  • Design an architectural vision for delivery teams aligning the product vision, stakeholder requirements and future capabilities and educate the team on this vision.

  • Coach and lead developers, solution architects and technical leads on best practices, reusability, development best practices and understanding technical debt as well as the impact of these on availability and stability SLAs

  • Document best practices, enterprise development patterns, technology implementation strategies and drive education and adoption through the organization\

  • Establish the current and future technology landscape for CarMax considering global principles, business vision, external best practices, competitive landscape and emerging technologies.

  • Partner with leaders across the organization to assist in the development of roadmaps including timeline, budget, team structure and skillset requirements.

  • Assist in attracting, recruiting and retaining a strong bench of skilled and engaged associates

  • Assist in the development and measurement of Objectives for the EA organization

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE :

  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and creativity

  • Proven analytic orientation as well as ability to be comfortable with some uncertainty

  • Demonstrated focus on delivering creative features that will guarantee market differentiation

  • Innovative; thinks beyond boundaries

  • Persuasive communicator – able to explain complex or intangible

  • Proficient speaking to large audiences and executives

  • Entrepreneurial drive and spirit; enjoys working in a fast-paced environment

  • Handles constructive criticism with ease; adapts easily and efficiently to change

  • Broad understanding of enterprise technology landscape including security, infrastructure, operations, networking and application development - likely has significant depth in at least one of these areas also.

  • BA/BS Degree required. Master’s Degree a plus.

  • 10+ years experience in Information Technology.

  • 3+ years of experience with lean/agile development processes
